Providing an Alternating Background Color for an ItemsControl

Often something you want to do is provide an alternating background color with a list of data.  The challenge is that this option is not built into any of the controls, such as an ItemsControl or a ListBox.  You can go as far as extending either of these controls, though the easiest way I’ve found to accomplish this is to use a converter.
